Does your horse like a certain type of music?

You’ve probably heard about the advantages of listening to classical music when you’re stressed or trying to concentrate. You may have been told that dairy farms offer classical Music to their cows to increase the flow of milk. Did you know that the horses also have a craving for Music?

Research has shown that horses love listening to country and classical Music. Music is an effective method of calming horses in stressful situations. It also can enhance their surroundings and make them more relaxed and happy workers.

Research has shown that horses feel happier overall when Music is played at the stable than without. Therefore, we should be thinking about how Music might integrate with our Horse’s daily maintenance. In the end, making them feel more comfortable in their surroundings will also be happier with us!

Horse Owners should have these items.

Does Music Affect Horse Behavior?

Scientists have done various studies over the past decade to determine how Music influences horse behavior. They discovered that Music has short- and long-term benefits for horses’ performance and well-being.

Horse behavior can be affected by Music. Horses can relax and let go of their flight instincts when they listen to Music within their comfort range. However, horses can be agitated by loud or electric Music and feel distressed.

Janet Marlow, a music composer and researcher is well-known for her ability to understand how animals respond to Music. She collected data for years on the hearing abilities of horses, dogs, and cats. Marlow was able to create “species-specific music” that suited each animal’s needs.

Marlow was not the only one to investigate what Music sounds like to horses’ ears. We will be taking a closer look at existing research and its amazing findings.

Music Calms Horses During Traveling

Claire Neveux is a researcher in horse welfare and was searching for a way to reduce horses’ acute stress. Long-term stress can be reduced by classical music, which has been well-known for its ability to reduce anxiety-related behavior.

Neveux joined forces with researchers from the France’s University of Strasbourg and the University of Caen to examine whether classical Music can be used to reduce acute stress. The team studied 48 horses in two groups at the French National Stud

The trailering time for the first group was approximately 21 minutes. The second group received a farrier visit. These stressors were applied to both groups in three different situations:

  1. Music playing through special in-ear headphones
  2. Music playing through earplugs
  3. No music

The scientists used the tune from Forrest Gump by Alan Silvestri.

Music helped horses recover quicker after stress in the trailer, but it did not help them during farriery work. The team explained the results as transport is more stressful than visits from farriers for horses.

Music Increased the Performance of Racehorses

A group of researchers in Poland found that Music can increase the performance of racehorses. The team studied seventy-three-year-old Arabian racehorses. They divided them into two groups: a test group of forty horses and a control group of thirty horses.

Five hours of specially composed Music were played daily by the test group. The researchers also monitored horses’ heart rates during warm-up, tacking-up, and rest. The researchers also recorded the horses’ performance during races and the number they won.

The experiment lasted for three months. The researchers discovered that Music positively affected every activity compared to the control group. Horses who listened to Music won more races than horses who didn’t!

Older Horses Like Music Too

In 2019, Polish scientists conducted a study to determine if Music can reduce stress in older horses. The heart rate and variability of twenty warmbloods between 20 and 70 years old were examined.

The researchers created to test and control groups, similar to the previous study. The test group played new age music for relaxation for four weeks while the control group listened to no music.

The Music’s benefits in this study were, however, only temporary. Music temporarily affected the horses’ heart rate, but it was not enough to lower their heart rate for the first few weeks.

Should You Play Music to Your Horse?

If your Horse is anxious or hyperactive, you might consider playing Music to them. Music can calm horses in stressful situations or help them relax.

Music should be introduced to your horse after some consideration. It won’t be enough to simply turn on the radio. If done right, Music can be a great addition to the Horse’s life.

Horses Have Good Hearing

Horses can hear as well as we. Their frequency range is between 55Hz to 33,500Hz, while ours is between 20Hz and 20,000Hz. Horses can improve their hearing by turning towards the sound source.

You should keep the volume low if you want to play Music with your Horse. Experts say horses prefer Music that is 21 d
