The Damascus approach the production of kitchen knives not only with intelligence but also with the soul. Each such knife is a work of art, which is wonderfully combined with functionality and high quality. According to ancient tradition, Damascus brands still produce models of blades with removable wooden handles.
Why do you need a detachable handle?
This Damascus knife is made according to ancient technology using manual labor. The blade is made from single-layer high-carbon steel or multi-layer – Damascus. The latter is characterized by an extremely long service life; such blades are inherited. High-carbon hard steel, when properly handled, retains its sharpness for a long time and does not require frequent sharpening.
As for the handles, Damascus manufacturers use the following types of mounting:
1. Invoice.
Common in Europe, Damascus knives may also have this type of handle mounting. In this case, pads are attached to the blade shank on the sides with pins and rivets.
2. Rider.
Traditional for Damascus. The shank is “driven” into the handle of a rounded section and fixed. In this case, the handle can be replaced with a new one when it loses its presentable appearance or wears out.

Replaceable handles are very practical as wood usually wears out faster than high carbon laminated steel. And thanks to the possibility of replacing the handle, it is not necessary to deeply process the wood and it retains its natural qualities, beauty, and warmth. Blades with a removable handle can be “updated” even by an ordinary consumer.
How to remove the handle
When planning to replace a detachable knife handle, first wrap the blade tightly with cloth or duct tape to protect your hands from cuts. Then knock off the old handle, clean the shank from the glue with sandpaper. Lubricate the shank and the new handle from the inside with glue. Firmly insert the shank into the handle and fix it with clamps or in a vice until the glue dries completely.
If the new handle is made from untreated wood, it should be sanded and, if desired, varnished to prolong its service life. You can also save it from premature damage by regularly treating the handle with a clove or boiled linseed oil.
Detachable handles from Damascus brands, as a rule, are already sanded and covered with a decorative protective composition, they fit perfectly under the shank and do not loosen over time. And to delay the replacement of the handle, follow the rules for handling the knife, wipe dry after washing, and store in a dry place away from other cutlery.
